Definition
A disavow file is a plain text file (.txt) that lists URLs or domains you want Google to ignore when evaluating your site's backlink profile.
Why it matters
If you have toxic backlinks that could trigger a penalty or are already hurting rankings, a disavow file is the official way to neutralize them.
File format
One URL or domain per line. Comments start with #. Domain-level entries use 'domain:example.com'. The file must be encoded in UTF-8.
When to use it
Use disavow for manual penalties, negative SEO attacks, and clear spam patterns. Do not disavow borderline links 'just to be safe'.
How to upload
Go to Google Search Console > Disavow Links Tool, select your property, and upload the .txt file.
